Can’t We Just Hang Out by the Ocean?
If you have ever left a gathering feeling like you learned something but connected with no one, it’s not your fault.
It is the facilitator’s responsibility to create the conditions that allow you to actually show up and let your guard down.
Most of us have been there. Trapped in a corner. Talking to the same two people. Armor up the entire time.
I once attended a conference held right on the beach. The whole time we sat inside while everyone quietly stared out the window at the ocean.
We were all thinking the same thing. Can we not just walk out there?
When an organizer does not use the space in a way that invites more from the people in it, something is lost.
Even the most ordinary room has potential. But someone has to care enough to unlock it.
Healthy facilitation is not just about what people learn. It is about who they become to each other by the time they leave.
You deserve nothing less.
